Covid19 Way of Life

What a roller coaster ride it has been since the last time I posted about this virus that so much impacted all our lives! Almost four months after, we have learned to cope and to adjust to a world health crisis of a huge proportion.

On March 11, 2020, USA had confirmed cases of 1,056 with 31 deaths. China was leading the pack of Covid19 confirmed cases. We had our eyes gazed on CCP’s virus spread where it all started.

March 30, 2020USA

Fast Forward to three days ago, and there were three million confirmed cases in the U.S. alone as of July 18, 2020! And this time around though, many are no longer as afraid compared to when it was just slowly spreading in March 2020. We’ve heard so much news about Corona Virus, that I think many got immune; and being on a lock down for a few months, they just had enough; and let their guard downThey become less guarded or vigilant; and stopped being cautious about potential trouble or danger. Most refused to be told what to do, especially about wearing a face mask. It’s not their style!

Wearing face mask is now part of our daily life; at least for those who believe in protecting themselves and others. There have been an ongoing divisive discussions and conflicts about wearing face masks. It’s good, one group said; it’s bad, another group complained. It’s weird enough to stay away from people for fear of getting infected; that by just getting too close for comfort, we will become Covid positive! They might be all cover up with theirs or others saliva full of Covid! Yikes! This sounds funny, but this is what our lives revolve around nowadays: That droplets full of a killer virus!

The scary “crown”
Amazingly, there are more than a million survivors in America as to this writing.

Amazingly, there are more than a million survivors in America as to this writing.

Who knows how long Covid 19 is staying around. Are we going to see the light at the end of all these next year?

The 1918 flu pandemic lasted from February 1918 to April 1920, it infected 500 million people–about a third of the world’s population at the time–in four successive waves. The death toll is typically estimated to have been somewhere between 17 million and 50 million, making it one of the deadliest pandemics in human history.

I do wear face mask with face shield. Honestly, I take this Covid 19 very seriously!

The deadly Plague-like Virus that crippled the World

Who would think that 2020 would be the year that God’s anger would arise and His wrath would take full force against a disobedient world? Whether they tackle this or not on mainstream or social media, God finally has to put His foot down!

Screenshot_20200322-102741_Photoshop Express.jpg

Screenshot_20200322-101027_Photoshop Express-1.jpg

Never did we experience this deadly health crisis in this modern times in our lifetime. Occasionally, we experienced and heard of viruses, like the swine flu, the Spanish Flu in 1918, Sars, Influenza and other viruses gone viral. In this modern age, we are faced with this quick spreading coronavirus that’s called Covid-19. The world is stunned, scared and in panic. Easy and quick fixes are nowhere in sight! Covid-19 does not discriminate either. The deadly virus affected the poor and the rich! The case counts are rising every seconds, every minute. The global deaths are estimated this minute at 15,390 and 351,003 in confirmed cases.

The rich can’t handle the quarantine. They are ready to party, what’s the hold up? Before you know it, they, too, got infected! The more this modern virus spread each and everyday, the medical experts are finding out that the wicked virus is not only infecting and killing the elderly, but also the youthful, prideful generations.

The only relief in sight is coming to God, through His Son, Jesus Christ, humbling ourselves and realizing we have turned away from the only One who can heal and save us all. Our sins have found us out! The people who were praying for world justice; were answered. Unbeknownst to us, millions have prayed this prayer.

Screenshot_20200322-105846_Photoshop Express.jpg

At the time like this, why am I posting this? This is the best time! This is the time when we can share our need for a Savior and that is Jesus Christ, our Lord. The reality is we have a Savior of the world. Not only does He heal us, He forgives us when we repent and ask for His Salvation! In Christ, whether we live or die at this current global trying times, we belong to the Lord. In Christ we will be with Him in paradise, in heaven! Absence from the body is present with the Lord.

Coronavirus without Jesus Christ is scary! You would die from it, and you would die again without eternal Salvation from Jesus Christ. This is the time of reckoning- the time when one is called to account for one’s actions and to pay one’s debts He owes to God. With our surrendered will to Jesus Christ, our debt to God is paid in full. But not until we sincerely have turned away from our sins and follow our Savior and our Lord, the Son of God and transformed by Him.

We are all sinners and the sooner we realize that, the sooner we will set ourselves free from Satan’s strongholds on us. This catastrophic epidemic that is hitting us is the devil’s heyday! He is in celebration that millions would come to his fold in death.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. We are desperate for healing, If we’re not able to prevent the Virus, unable to regain our physical health, if we are to be infected by this virus, healing our eternal souls is the next best thing. It should really be our first major plan for our lives. As this is the will of God for us. He wants to save us. And to get our attention, sometimes, He uses His power of Wrath. We can’t stop Him. He is God, He is the creator of this world we are living in. He is responsible for our birth. He assigns a time for us to be on earth to fulfill His plans and purposes for this world. He gives us a free will, but the last say is still His, whether you choose Him or not.

Here’s a prayer that will open God’s heaven for you. May this prayer bring you peace, comfort, encouragement and uplift your hearts that you are not alone in battling this vicious virus. If you sincerely pray this prayer, Jesus Christ will come to you and keep you able to withstand this health crisis we are all facing.Screenshot_20200322-114002_Photoshop Express.jpg

After you pray this, check out the internet for Holy Bible reading. This will bring you comfort as you weather this storm that we are all facing.

Getting acquainted with Dementia through a Loved One

It’s been almost a year from the first time I’ve realized that my older sister is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. I was not able to process the reality of seeing her lose her memories, at first, as the disease progresses. After many times absorbing and researching about the disease, I came to terms and found myself able to accept the fact that my sister’s brain and mind will succumb to the sad effects of this devastating prognosis.

Dementia

Being distance apart from her, it is much easier to deal with the ongoing situations that surrounds my sister’s daily trials accompanied with having Dementia. It gave me a lot to think about. The business of life is the acquisition of memories. I surely have quite a few with her. A lifetime ago, at an early age, she was like my second mother, who was tasked to take care of a brood of four siblings. I was the youngest, so I did not have a say but have the most memories that I occasionally shared with her in the past when it called for it;  and can be shared with her especially now. So in my every phone conversation with her, which have been quite a few nowadays, I encouraged her to reminisce with me about her past. I let her do the most talking as I’ve learned that it would be good for the state of her mind.

Dementia

I’ve learned as well, that there are days that she was incoherent. Her mood changes. She gets very sad and emotional. The sad part though, is she was always in a depressing state of mind ever since I can remember of her. I’ve never seen her truly happy and content in life. There were days in the distant past that she was indifferent and self absorbed, had a lack of compassion which can be as vulgar as an excess of tears to put it mildly. She was in her small, little world of loneliness and it carried through to this day. Sadly, it is what she divulges to me now. No one talks to her. She said she doesn’t have anyone to talk to.

I feel compassion toward her. She always has a soft spot in my heart. Even when she was quite distant in her relationship with me and indifferent, I left things slide. There were months, we did not communicate or see each other which could be because we were just so busy dealing with life.

The twist of faith is that she is on a different stage of her life now that she’s recognizing that her memory is slipping away. When she calls me, she shares the same story over and over again. Patience is a virtue and I’ve exercised it everytime we converse on the phone. I’ve tried to entertain her. I’ve encouraged her to be around people, talk to them. She will be gung ho with the idea, then turn around and forget about it. I encouraged her to start reading books to help her memory, maybe start learning the internet. She sounded encouraged but goes back to not remembering what I’ve said and back to what she is familiar with: loneliness. She gets gossipy about her daughter in law and losing things. Thank goodness, this has been far between lately as she is now concentrated with the memory of a past love. She shared it with me with so much enthusiasm that she spoke with this person on skype on Christmas Day; and who she had been carrying a torch for, for the longest time!

I don’t know how many million times we reminisce this time of her life in my lifetime. I encouraged her because it means so much to her. Especially now, in her condition, she needs an uplift. Because of this experience of having a skype conversation with this person occupying her mind most of her life, she again was coherent. She speaks very clear. She even wanted to see this person and wanted me to accompany her. She seems back to normal. She was so astounded that I remember their times together because I was there. She could not believe I remember those days even though I was probably nine or ten years old. She said I helped her remember and she was so ecstatic! That’s the focus of her memories right now.

Through all of this, there was something in my mind that concerns me. Her eternal salvation. I’ve been praying to God to influence our conversations with His Word. The impossibility with possibility for nothing is impossible to God. God is listening I know. He doesn’t want my sister to perish but to find her salvation in Christ. With our many conversations my sister and I have had, there is the Silent Voice of the Holy Spirit leading and preparing my heart to open up about Jesus’ offer of eternal life in heaven. Share God’s plan and Good News! In my alone time with God, I asked God to bring someone to my sister’s life that would share the Good News better than me; that has the Godly ability to place it in my sister’s heart! Please, please God, I want to see my sister in heaven! Please, please God, in Jesus name!

The other night when my sister told me the uplifting experience she had with skype’s one on one with this unforgettable person, that brought joy and sadness in her life, and subsequently led us to reminisce her past with this man; I started speaking to her about how God influences our paths in life. And she said she believed it. I told her that things happened to us for a reason and God’s hand is on it every step of the way. The cue came when she asked me about my husband’s faith. And the Holy Spirit took over! She listened thoroughly when I shared with her the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I told her at the end of sharing the Good News with her, that before she goes to sleep that she gives her heart to Jesus that night.

GodsGift

Whether she did it or not, it is now in God’s hand. I prayed to God that He influences my sister’s mind and embed the Good News of His eternal Gift in my sister’s heart and mind so she can spend her eternal life in heaven. Nothing is impossible to God when you pray whole heartedly about another person. God is Faithful! That night, my sister and I talked for about 5 hours! Centered on her! I told her God is willing to talk to her through Jesus Christ, that she is not alone!

That night, I was so exhausted! Looking back, all my spirit juices poured into it. The Holy Spirit’s spring of water flowing into my being interconnected with my sister’s heart and mind.

“God not only has a general purpose for each of us, but He also has a specific plan for each of our lives. God knows all about you, and He has a plan for you. That’s why you can pray and seek God’s will when you face decisions, and it is why you can know God is with you every moment of the day.” Billy Graham

When my sister called yesterday, she was still on the subject of that old past love. For an hour, she was over and over again telling me about him, which I’ve heard so many times before. I told her we will need to cut it short as I was lacking sleep and I was just so tired. I needed a break! I went to bed early last night. After introducing kindness to the equation of conversing with my sister, my mind is ready to hibernate. Before I hit the sack, I prayed especially for my sister.

Fruits for Breakfast!

I took a break from doing veggie and fruit smoothies and celery juicing for breakfast first week of July this year. I could feel my system needed a change. I’m completely off from any prescribed BP medication since last year and I feel good without those horrible side effects that came with BP med! My cardiologist couldn’t agree more. He was happy with my BP readings without the medication in my system, but instead it’s with the help of plant based eating daily.

Spring 2019 was dealing mostly with sinus allergy that seemed like forever. I thought the sneezing and runny nose would be my company for a while there. Even with smoothies and juicing, the sinus battle continued. I’ve ordered from Amazon anything Elderberry, Echinacea, Vicks Vaporub and inhaler and humidifier.

Spring was a struggle; but the Spring sun was a relief. I always enjoy the Spring sun, way too beautiful.

Since I stopped juicing and drinking homemade smoothies, which I have done mostly since 2016, I’ve decided to try eating fruits for breakfast this summer. There’s abundance of fruits in summertime so I am taking advantage of the many fruit choices. Although, Winter last year and Spring 2019, I was consuming citrus like oranges, pumelos, grapefruits aside from eating apples.

Oatmeal was my favorite morning warm ups. I kept up with veggie salads as sides for lunch. My BP readings stayed down and good. I’ve maintained my weight and kept myself busy with organizing and getting rid of dust collectors and clutters.

When I started fruits only for breakfast, my energy heightened much better than doing smoothies and celery juice. I’ve realized, too, that when I juiced fruits, it did not agree with my system as I’ve lost the fiber my body needs. However, when I eat whole fruits; three or four small servings of different kinds of fruits, I feel great! With veggie salads, all organic, like arugula, different varieties of cucumbers, romaine, tomatoes, avocados for lunch and a main daily homemade dish of small serving of either fish, or lean chicken or lean meat, I am set for the next hours of intermittent fasting daily. I’ve incorporated IF since 2016 and my sleeping patterns and circadian rhythms are at its best! Sleep has always been sweet. Unless, something is worrying me or there are exciting events the next day that would keep me tossing and turning, most of my sleeping hours are so satisfying. I found out that by the time I am ready for bed, all the food I’ve eaten have almost been fully digested by the time I hit the bed, so all my system has to do is repairing and healing what needs to be healed in my body while I’m asleep. Eating fruits in the morning has lowered my blood pressure naturally, much better readings than with smoothies and juicing.

There are some days I’d get off IF when travelling or eating out. If I get lucky, and I did not eat restaurants’ foods which cause heartburn, my sleep will still be okay. Sometimes, I need that break, but the next day, I’d go back to my eating schedules to maintain my weight. It’s not easy especially when I splurge on some sweet desserts and bread. But I need to focus for the sake of my blood pressure.

As we get older, blood pressure spikes especially if we are not eating right. I’ve learned that high blood pressure leads to so many illnesses. It’s an indicator when something is wrong in our body. It’s a signal of some future events that are detrimental to our health. I’ve learned of this after thorough research and personal experiences when I started getting aware of this silent killer. High blood pressure almost always show up as one of the contributing factors to illnesses when diagnosed with heart disease, heart failure, stroke, diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney disease, Adrenal and thyroid disorders, sleep apnea as one of the few known causes associated with high blood pressure.

So, organic fruits for breakfast to the rescue! So many fruit choices, including bananas, apples, cherries… I love summer!

Social Media – What’s good and bad about it?

SocialMedia7

I remember when I’ve decided to join the internet connection many years ago, social media was not even named as such. I used the world wide web then to research and gain knowledge on things I was interested in. Slowly, platforms like chatting and communication websites started popping up; but it was nothing big. Everything was through the internet. I found it at that time to be where you can relax after long days of work. No smartphones then, so time was more spent socializing in real life.

I’ve learned so much about the world through the net. The internet has been a huge library with all kinds of information available to everyone, if they are eager to learn outside the box. I’ve learned to create my personal websites and that kept me busy and my way of relaxing my mind from the hassle of day to day struggles and trials brought by real life.

SocialMedia8.jpg

I’ve socialized with people in chatrooms and chat websites, but in the long run I’ve lost connections as many closed down and were not able to maintain the financial costs of daily operations. Though I’ve met interesting people through these formats, we did not really know each other’s personal daily life. No one was sharing pictures daily, so it was more private and there was an aura of mystery, even with the celebrities who we may have encountered, but very rare. Looking back, I like that idea. After a while, too much information can create too much noise in our heads.

SocialMedia9.jpg.png

Landlines actually had positive advantages because you can actually converse with people, relatives and friends in catching up with their life happenings. You can actually hear their voices and connect with them much better. I so miss that! Now, everyone owns a phone and it’s with them 24/7, but most do not take the time to use it as it’s supposed to be intended. We are actually using our phones now for different things than calling. Mostly used for social media connections. Rarely I get a phone chats on my cell phone. Most avoids the person to person chats.

SocialMedia3

What is so funny is people I know personally will tell me on Facebook they miss me. How can you miss someone you don’t take time to call? If you get lucky and they call you, you can sense, they are antsy to get off the phone. It’s so obvious!

SocialMedia2

Everything now is rush. I’d be lucky if I can talk to someone I know personally and converse for 15 minutes. Everyone seems to be in a rush. Some people lost their communication skills, even when you socialize with them in person.

“Communications skills refers to the: ability to exchange information in a productive and constructive manner, capability to convey information that is helpful to the receiver, talent to express ideas effectively, expertise in delivering facts, statistics, knowledge, guidance, advice in a useful manner, mastery over the art of communication, competence to hold discussions and creating a win-win situation, impressive way of delivering a speech or presenting something with finesse.

Communication skills are vital to many aspects of our life, and so it is crucial to have good communication. When we have good communication skills, the people we are trying to communicate with will be able to understand exactly what we are trying to say, and at the same time, we will understand exactly what they are trying to say.”

SocialMedia

Everyone’s smartphones are on each other’s way of a good conversation. Constantly seeing what your friends and relatives do through social media cause to lose your interest about their personal life. We are so inundated now with all kinds of pictures, videos of people of different walks of life and their daily activities, that most of us feel burnt out and just about have enough. Funny thing, is what you see they share is a replica of what they feel inside. Pictures tell so much, if you happened to be endowed with discernment.

SocialMedia4

What’s good about social media? At least you get connected long term with your friends and relatives, though you don’t really communicate. You get updated with their life on the surface through their pictures and postings.

Does social media connection affect your mental health? I believe in some aspects, it does. People have the tendency to brag. It’s human nature. Depression is very common with humans. Discontentment plays huge in our emotions and it affects our brain. The Holy Bible says that humans are all broken. They all fall short of the glory of God.

“Glory as an Attribute. The most common use of the word “glory” in the Bible is to describe the splendor, holiness and majesty of God. Glory, in this sense, is often associated with a person experiencing God’s presence in a tangible way.”SocialMedia6

Cold bedroom, best sleep!

This morning, I woke up and the room temperature was 62 degrees F. That is very cold for me. But when it’s cold in the bedroom, I always get the most relaxing, peaceful and long slumber.

sleep7

I’ve been so fortunate for a while now that I am able to get a good shut eye, at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep. It was not always a great sleep in the past for me. I had trouble sleeping before and I would wake up tired.

Two years ago, I’ve decided to find ways to correct my sleeping habits in the hope that I can cure my insomnia or sleep disorder. Through the latter part of my adult life, good sleep was very hard to achieve.

sleep2

I resorted into taking over the counter sleeping pills, and then switched into more natural sleep aid, like Melatonin and Valerian. They did not really help that much. From time to time when I was very tired, I would doze off and get maybe 4 to 6 hours of sleep. For one thing my mind was so active, mostly worrying about the next day’s work activity or maybe personal issues would interrupt my sleep.

The internet and cell phones did not help and when social media and smart phones came along, sleeping was a distraction more than a necessity.

sleep9

Especially when some research group was saying you don’t need to have an eight hour of sleep. It’s different in each individual. Not everybody have the same sleeping requirements. So that played in my mind and as long as I’d get to sleep, even just five hours a night, I will be okay. I did not have a sleeping schedule set. Whenever I feel sleepy, that was the time. But as time went by, the less sleep I was getting. I had to rely on over the counter sleeping medication on nights when I was so wide awake. My mind was going 100 miles per minute thinking of so many things.

On one of our vacation road trips, I found a book written by Dr. Don Colbert entitled The Bible Cure for Sleep Disorders. The book gave way for me to embark and research about achieving a natural way to get good sleep.

Work With Your Wake/Sleep Cycles
Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day can help to set a rhythm to your sleep cycle and prompt your body to recognize when rest time is approaching. A morning ritual such as meditation or yoga that reduces your stress can be extremely beneficial – and this can also be repeated before sleep.

Move your body earlier in the day and avoid anything too vigorous at night, if possible. Movement, particularly movement that gets the heart rate up or is physically exerting, typically activates the sympathetic nervous system making you alert and awake, and subsequently decreases your melatonin (sleep hormone) production. Instead, in the evening, allow yourself time to slow down, unwind and stimulate your sleep neurotransmitters. Around 60 to 90 minutes before sleep, turn off your “devices”, turn the lights down and maybe include some meditation or light reading. Finding sleep hygiene that works for you is incredibly important, but these are great starting points for everyone. from: https://www.foodmatters.com/article/when-sleep-is-elusive-getting-quality-rest?fbclid=IwAR2n_bPPRMTPltLnxchyez6DdCw09nZAl8m5oS-ftwXDDv2kSMigL4Kszpg

The first thing I’ve changed was my sleeping schedule. I started sleeping at the same time at night and waking up at the same time in the morning. It took time changing the bad sleeping habit. Though Deep Sleep supplements helped me to make a transition from a poor quality of sleep to a rhythmic sleep cycle; I realized that it caused chest pains in the long term. I don’t take them anymore.

sleep4

I made it a point to turn off my desktop computer two hours before bed. I give myself time to relax. I brush my teeth two hours before I go to bed as I find that brushing my teeth right before bed makes me wide awake.

What helps me to stay asleep is making sure that I’m done with my daily water intake, which is 8 glasses a day, about 4 to 5 hours before bed, and not eating before bedtime. That’s where my intermittent fasting works in my favor. I stopped eating by 4 to 5 pm at the latest. It settles my stomach and most of the food I’ve eaten have digested by the time I get to bed. I don’t experience heartburn that can interrupt with sleep. I don’t take any medication nor supplement I discovered could interrupt with my sleep. Celery juice and smoothies and vegetables and fruits had helped me settle my stomach at night.

“Set your smart thermostat to slowly lower your home’s temperature starting at dinner time and ending at 65 degrees when bedtime rolls around. This gradual loss of temperature and light can really help stoke the motivation to sleep.” https://www.menshealth.com/health/a25628788/how-to-get-more-sleep-expert/

In winter, I would turn off the central heat and by the time I’m in bed the bedroom is getting cold. During warm days, I set my air cooling thermostat to 68 degrees, but now that I know that I can have a good sleep at 62 degrees under three blankets and a thick comforter, I might settle for 65 degrees.

What I find so helpful that relaxes my mind is reading my daily Bible devotional before bed. As I meditate on God’s Word, my mind relaxes and what I have read about God’s goodness and faithfulness and His love for us completely take over my mind. Thankfulness and gratefulness to God clears my mind of worry, concern and fear and giving my burden to Him stop the mind from self-involved thoughts. Afterwards, I would do my deep breathing of 4-7-8 about 8 times

breathing

and I’m ready for a restful shut eye.

And If I get lucky, I might remember my dream that I usually have about the time I would wake up. And I remember a lot of my dreams since I no longer deprive myself of a much needed sleep every night. I actually have a sleep journal and it’s fun to go back and review what I wrote from time to time.

When I get to Stage 5 of my sleep, I can feel, when I wake up in the morning, that I had a restful, long and peaceful sleep and a deep sleep at that. I’m getting a lot of them lately, the cold weather must have aided as well.

sleep3

“What is deep sleep and how much do we need of it?

Some studies have shown that your deep sleep should at least be 20% of your overall sleep. It means that since most adults need 8-9 hours of sleep, they will need about 1.6-1.8 hours of deep sleep to feel fully functional next day.” from: newhealthadvisor.com

What stage of sleep is most important?

For a quick review of the four stages of sleep:
Stage 1 (N1): This is the lightest sleep, lasting as little as five minutes,…
Stage 2 (N2): This light sleep is also fairly easy to be awoken from,…
Stage 3 (N3; formerly N3 and N4): This is deep sleep, during which the body performs maintenance…
Stage 5: REM sleep is the only sleep stage in which we dream.

from: soundsleephealth.com

sleep

Why is REM sleep important?

REM sleep is important because it is the restorative part of our sleep cycle. Typically, you begin the sleep cycle with a period of non-REM sleep followed by a very short period of REM sleep. from: azumio.com

How much sleep does an adult need?

An average adult needs between 7.5 and 8 hours of sleep per night.

Can you get too much deep sleep?

According to New Health Advisor, adults 18 and older need anywhere from 1.5-1.8 hours of deep sleep per night, which is about 20% of your overall sleep. Some people, however, may find they need more in order to feel fully rested. There’s no such thing as too much deep sleep. from: eightsleep.com

Bananas, my natural healer!

Cloudy days have been overstaying their welcome more this time of the year than the previous years in our woods. I have to find ways to combat SAD (seasonal affected disorder) for dark clouds affect my mood every year. From September to February, I feel sometimes, in a sad mood, not depressed but just a feeling of being under the clouds. It somehow triggers memories of years gone by, that easily make me emotional, though I’m able to manage it well, and I have to thank God for that.

It’s not as worse as when we used to live in California. In California, when it hit the month of September, there’s a gloomy touch in the air when Fall season arrives. It’s still sunny, but you can feel the dampness, especially the area where we used to live being close to the beach. I used to start getting sick in September without fail. My SAD got some relief when I was told at a health store that Gaba plus can help with SAD. And it did, but I cannot take it long term as it has a side effect.

When I’ve embraced eating plant based food, where I lost a lot of weight, I started to get familiarized with the benefits of each vegetable and fruit I’ve been eating. This year, the Celery juice has been giving me a lot of energy and it helps with SAD during this time of the year. I started taking calcium with Vitamin D3 and it’s been helping with SAD also. I’ve added more bananas in my fruit daily intake and I’ve discovered that it helps with SAD also! What do you know!

If You Think Bananas Are Just For Monkeys, Think Againbananas

These 25 ways to use and eat bananas will blow your mind!

1. Bananas help overcome depression due to high levels of tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin — the happy-mood brain neurotransmitter.

2. Eat two bananas before a strenuous workout to pack an energy punch and sustain your blood sugar.

3. Protect against muscle cramps during workouts and night time leg cramps by eating a banana.

4. Counteract calcium loss during urination and build strong bones by supplementing with a banana.

5. Improve your mood and reduce PMS symptoms by eating a banana, bananas5 which regulates blood sugar and produces stress-relieving relaxation.

Last, but not least, my close relationship with God has helped enormously with SAD for before I become a Bible believer Christian, my SAD was more of a depression than anything because it was throughout the year as far as I can remember and would get worse when Fall season starts.

Hopefully, March will bring more sunlight and beautiful days ahead. I always hope for brighter days and they are not far from sight! I can bet on that!

Sugar, more than Salt, raises Blood Pressure

I’ve learned this the hard way this weekend. Sugar did raise my blood pressure. I take my blood pressure regularly so I know My BP level has been good, until I’ve made this Sweet and Sour Cucumber. It calls for regular white sugar and clear vinegar in the recipe. I heated them together to dissolve and mix the sugar with the vinegar. The end result was very good. I made it twice last week, the second one I prepared last Saturday as side dish. I added some thinly sliced onions and carrots for garnish. One of the best cucumber salads I made. I was happy with it and so did my household.

Then came this chest pain last Sunday. The pain subsided when I took an aspirin and I was able to have a good night and restful sleep. However, when I took my blood pressure this afternoon, my blood pressure was 148, 150 systolic. Before this, my BP level has not gone up since I’ve learned to control my eating habits, which is mostly a Mediterranean diet with lots of veggies and fruits. I can have some bread, or some crackers and even ice cream in some occasions and my blood pressure would not get affected.

“Carbohydrates cause the body to hold on to water. When the water volume increases in our blood, the pressure in our blood vessels increase.
The same can happen when we consume salt.
However, only one of these will cause chronically elevated blood pressure.

Again, too many refined carbohydrates increase water in the blood thus increasing blood pressure. Refined carbs have no nutrients. The nutrients are stripped out in the refining process. As we’ve seen the body must maintain sodium in the bloodstream or significant health problems will ensue. Consider that an intravenous solution of salt water is the first thing given to ER patients. You would be surprised just how many studies exist that shows no connection to salt and hypertension. So forget the studies. Study it in yourself. If you have hypertension, reduce your salt intake for two weeks and do nothing else (you’re probably already doing this). See if that brings down your blood pressure significantly. If not, eliminate all sugar intake in the form of refined sugar and refined carbs for two weeks. See what happens.”                                                       FearlessEating.net

Sugar

“One out of every three US adults has high blood pressure (hypertension).  If you’re among them, one of the first recommendations your physician probably gave you was to cut back on salt.
Yet, there’s far more to maintaining a healthy blood pressure than eating a low-salt diet – a strategy that works for some people and fails for others.
In fact, fewer than half of Americans with high blood pressure have their condition under control,  and perhaps this is because conventional physicians have been focused on the “wrong white crystals,” namely salt instead of sugar.
One of the primary underlying causes of high blood pressure is related to your body producing too much insulin and leptin in response to a high-carbohydrate (i.e. high sugar) and processed food diet.

New Study:   Sugar May be Worse for Your Blood Pressure Than Salt
You’ve probably heard of the DASH diet, which is claimed to be among the most effective for controlling hypertension. It consists largely of fresh vegetables, fruits, lean protein, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and very low sodium content.
But it’s ALSO low in sugar/fructose. So, while people on DASH diets do tend to show reduced hypertension, the reason for this may not be solely the reduction in salt, but the reduction in sugar.
The same holds true for reducing your intake of processed foods, which are top sources of both heavily processed salt and sugar/fructose. In a new review in the journal Open Heart, the authors also argue that the high consumption of added sugars in the US diet may be more strongly and directly associated with high blood pressure than the consumption of sodium.

Story at-a-glance
Added sugars, particularly fructose, in the US diet may be more strongly related to high blood pressure than salt
Cutting processed foods from your diet may benefit high blood pressure not only because it reduces salt, but more likely because it reduces sugar
Excess sugar in your diet increases blood pressure and heart rate and contributes to inflammation, insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction.”

MadhavaCoconutSugar

I have not used white sugar for quite sometime in any recipe that calls for white sugar, except last week. I thought, it would not affect me since I have not used it for months. What I have been using if I need to add sugar in my recipe or my oatmeal is Madhava Coconut Sugar. It does not affect my blood pressure. This proves to me that I cannot have simple, white sugar added to any of my foods. My fasting sugar when it was checked last year was normal. I want to keep it as normal as possible. Especially now that I know how sugar can affect my BP more than salt. I also stopped using table salt or processed salt as this type of salt can also raise up my blood pressure.

RealSalt

I have been using Redmond Ancient Fine Sea Salt. This all-natural sea salt comes from the underground salt deposit in Central Utah. The deposit was left there by a pristine ancient sea that covered much of North America millions of years ago. This sea salt has not raised up my blood pressure and I don’t use so much of it either. I’ve read that this type of salt is similar to the sodium content in our own blood. That’s why we cannot totally eliminate sodium in our diet as long as they come from good sources for our body.

“Water, sea salt, and potassium together regulate the water content of the body. Our daily food contains potassium from natural sources such as fruits and vegetables, but not table salt (sodium chloride). That’s why we need to supplement our daily diet with sea salt.”

January, a Recovery month with Celery Juice

I was texting one of my best friends today, and while chatting with her, I suddenly realized that January, with its pitfalls, is really a recovery period from a hectic and stressful December. january

I’ve always thought of January as dragging because of the winter weather. But it is actually a month to heal, to begin a new chapter, a clean slate to start the new year and start all over again. We can carry the good in the new year, and leave behind the bad in the old year.

One of the things I’m bringing with me from last year is what I’ve learned about the healing benefits of Celery Juice.

celery6part2

I do not have so many health issues, thank goodness, but what it did to my body is a miracle by itself. I’ve realized it healed my Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which did not miss a beat every November through February. Because of the energy level the juice gives, dragging days are the thing of the past. The juice has given me great sleep. My blood pressure has stabilized and has stayed normal.

I’ve done green smoothies most of last year and the year before. The smoothies have given great benefits and with intermittent fasting that is part of my healthy regimen for years now, I’m on track. I gave up taking blood pressure medication which hurt my system and given me angina or chest pain because of the side effects that had made me reach for Nitrostat to aid and stop the chest pain. After so many months of side effects that had given me fatigue, body chills, feeling of passing out and lost of quality of life, stopping the medication was the right thing to do and replaced it with natural healers through plant based foods. Gone was the chest pain and back to feeling normal.

With the addition of the Celery Juice, it’s totally a different ballgame. It’s diuretic which relieves and excrete water in my system, which helps stabilize the blood pressure. Phthalides a group of active compounds found in celery juice help to reduce blood pressure by relaxing the muscles in and around the walls of the arteries. This causes the vessels to dilate which creates more space for the blood to flow at a lower level of pressure.

“Another interesting nutrient in celery juice called phthalide relaxes smooth muscles inside your blood vessels, thus helping to reduce high blood pressure. The phthalide in celery is also believed to help lower LDL cholesterol for better heart health.

Sleep Enhancer
The aforementioned celery juice benefits for high blood pressure, reducing hypertension and lowering stress hormones, alongside its high levels of electrolytes are probably a big part of why it is often suggested for enhancing relaxation and sleep.
Celery juice also contains magnesium, known as the calming mineral. Magnesium deficiency can lead to many health problems, including difficulty relaxing and getting to sleep so make sure you get enough of it.

Too much sodium, especially table salt or processed salt in the body cause water retention as the body tries to dilute the salt with large amounts of water. According to the Medical Medium, Anthony William: “If you’re worried that the sodium in celery is a problem because you’ve heard that “salt is salt,” know that the sodium in celery is not just salt or the basic mineral sodium. Medical research and science have not yet discovered the different varieties of sodium in celery, nor how beneficial they are. Celery’s naturally occurring sodium actually helps stabilize blood pressure, bringing it down when it’s too high and up when it’s too low. Further, it won’t dehydrate your organs—instead, it clings to toxic, dangerous salts from poor-quality foods and helps draw them out of your body while replacing them with undiscovered cluster salts.” I take my blood pressure regularly, so I can tell that the sodium on Celery juice doesn’t create a problem with my blood pressure.

“Celery is great for people suffering from arthritis, rheumatism, and gout. It has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce swelling and pain around the joints. Its sticks also act as a diuretic, which helps remove uric acid crystals that build up around the body’s joints that can add to the pain and discomfort.” organicfacts.net

The miracle of Celery Juice

Thanksgiving day 2018 came and gone and surprisingly, though I had an extra helping and went a little overboard with eats, my weight management did not suffer. I still do my intermittent fasting, my daily smoothies and veggie salads. With holidays, there are so many food temptations and I just can’t resist. Amazingly enough, I was able to maintain my weight, even with the extra calories from the Thanksgiving feast. I recently added Celery juicing because of the things I’ve read about it and the juicing benefits of celery.

celeryjuice

Organic celery is a staple in my fridge. I add it to my salads and cooking. There is this medical medium guru on Facebook that I follow and he faithfully promotes the healing benefits of celery juice. He said that celery has an incredible ability to create sweeping improvements for all kinds of health issues. He said that celery is truly the savior when it comes to chronic illness. He said it is most powerful to drink it alone. Aside from celery being an alkaline food, the health benefits are aplenty.celeryjuicebenefits2

In my case, it’s one of my food aids to naturally lower my blood pressure. It prevented constipation and amazingly aided with my weight. I see the difference in my weight scale.celeryjuicebenefits3

And yes, it helps with bloating. I don’t feel bloated like I feel water heavy, though I drink a lot of water each day. Celery contains Phthalides, phytonutrients that provides potential cardiovascular benefits. Celery phthalides can act as smooth muscle relaxants, most likely through their impact on the flow of calcium and potassium inside cells and related nervous system activity involved with muscle relaxation. Of course, relaxation of smooth muscles surrounding our blood vessels allows them to expand and the result is a lowering of blood pressure.

celeryjuicebenefits4

I drink celery juice first thing in the morning, and I wait about 30 to 45 minutes before I eat my breakfast. I combine 3 to 4 celery stalks, chopped, with some coconut water to aid in extracting the juice and I use the new, updated NutriBullet.

celeryjuicebenefitsI have not taken any blood pressure medications for almost a year now because of the very bad side effects. But because of the veggies (plus smoothies and celery juice) and fruits I eat everyday, and supplements of Fish Oil, Cholestoff, grape seed extract and olive leaf extract, I am able to get good BP readings.

And one thing that help with lowering my blood pressure is when I stopped adding salt when cooking. I don’t use table salt either. I try to buy food and condiments with a label indicating fewer milligrams of sodium, which we need and an essential nutrient in our body; as long as it’s not too much and excessive. I’ve learned that if we consume too much sodium, it can cause water retention, and our body may respond by raising our blood pressure to push the excess fluid and salt out of our system. Our heart is working hard, which is not normal, when our blood pressure is high and chest pain can occur.

“Humans are genetically programmed to eat ten times less sodium than we do now. Many so-called low-salt diets can actually be considered high-salt diets. That’s why it’s critical to understand what the concept of ‘normal’ is when it comes to sodium. Having a ‘normal’ salt intake can lead to a ‘normal’ blood pressure, which can contribute to us dying from all the ‘normal’ causes, like heart attacks and strokes. The American Heart Association recommends everyone consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium daily— that’s about three-quarters of a teaspoon of salt. The average American adult consumes more than double that amount about 3,500 mg daily. Reducing sodium consumption by just 15 percent worldwide could save millions of lives every year.

If we could cut our salt intake by about a half teaspoon a day, which is achievable by avoiding salty foods and not adding salt to our food, we might prevent 22 percent of stroke deaths and 16 percent of fatal heart attacks. That’s potentially more lives saved than if we were able to successfully treat people with blood pressure pills. Simply put, reducing salt is an easy at home intervention that may be more powerful than filling a prescription from the pharmacy. Up to ninety-two thousand American lives could be saved each year simply by eating less salt.”
